AMT12-2 Trickle Charger has been designed to keep a vehicle’s starter battery charged and protected from damage during prolonged periods of inactivity: while in storage for example. The charger feeds a low current into the starter battery to compensate for self-discharge and loads such as an alarm and tracker. At the same time, it ensures that the auxiliary/leisure battery is maintained.

In a typical scenario, a solar panel controller or mains charger is charging a leisure battery to protect it from damage during periods of inactivity and the trickle charger draws a small amount of current to maintain the vehicle’s starter battery. In this situation, the AMT12-2 Trickle Charger allows a maximum of 4A (usually considerably less) to flow from the leisure attery to the starter battery.

Even when no solar or mains charger is present, the Trickle Charger sends a charge from the leisure battery to the starter battery until they reach 11.5V & 11.7V respectively, ensuring that both batteries are kept as healthy as possible. With a low current draw of less than 2mA on a 12V system, the unit drains the leisure battery by approximately 1Ah every 20 days, so there’s a negligible effect on the battery’s capacity, which should easily cover a winter storage period.

The AMT12-2 works with both lead-acid and lithium batteries (12V and 24V) and has software that makes it compatible with conventional alternators and the latest stop/start and Euro 5/6 regenerative braking technologies. There are 4 user-selectable programmes, making it suitable for use with any auxiliary battery charging system including a simple voltage sensing relay and a battery-to-battery charger.

A status LED gives feedback on the Trickle Charger Operation & State of Charge of the Vehicle Battery & Auxiliary Battery Conditions. Ignition Override & Switch Enable allow the user to manually control the charging if for some reason they wish to override the automatic settings. Inbuilt fuse protection makes the installation quick & easy.
